DAY 4
Another Rain Delay
Dinosaur Museum
Day 4 was till a soggy mess. It has rained continually all through the night and most of the day. The fog was heavy and we couldn’t do much sight seeing. We headed to a Dinosaur Museum we ran across the night before. It had some roof damage from the hail and a leaky roof but it was pretty cool to see their exhibit of over 50 dinosaurs. The kids enjoyed taking pictures of their favorite ones. At the end of the self-guided tour, there was a mirror maze that everyone went though several times. Josh found a “trick” to find his way out…..look for water on the floor.

Sitting Bull Crystal Caverns
Next stop was Sitting Bull Crystal Cavern. Here we took a
very interesting cave tour, which was a rainy sloppy mess. Unlike the other
cave, the rain seeped through most parts of the cave. We had to walk down 10 flights of the most
extreme stairs I’ve seen. I was so nervous. Josh was ahead of me taking photos
with no fear. I was terrified and made Chandler walk no more than arms length
in front of me. Everyone else handled it like a champ. The Crystal Cavern is
the only cave in the area with Crystal formations throughout the entire cave.
On the way back up the stairs, I was getting a serious workout. I was super
tense, my legs were locked up but I pushed on with Chandler 2 steps ahead. My
adrenaline pushed me to get to the top. When I got there, my legs about gave
from under me. I was a proud momma and a Hot Mess at the same time.
$5000 fine if you touch the rock...... duh Colin
(guide gave him permission to touch that rock, its called the get it out of your system rock)
Are you kidding me...are you kidding me.....

Big Thunder Gold Mine
We headed down town for a tour of The Big Thunder Gold Mine. It was a very interesting tour to say the least. Our guide had some zingers that were borderline “I wanna loose my job” but he knew his facts about the mine and he could present them in a memorable manner. Josh was bringing up the rear of the crew with his own “under his breath” tour on mining. That was a HOOT. The kids have had their share of cave tours and they were troopers.

Mijo's Restaurant
Lunch had come and gone and we were over hungry. We sat down mid-afternoon at a Mexican Place on the strip called, Mijos. It was pretty good. We all enjoyed the down time.

The Rushmore Borglum Story
With time to spare, we went over to The Rushmore Borglum Story. It is a museum dedicated to the man, the artist behind Mount Rushmore, Gutzon Borglum. A must see museum before visiting Mt. Rushmore. Borglum’s story was amazing and his art I enjoy. His talent is so rare. He wished to see his completed work but died before the final unveiling. Please take a minute to read the story of Gutzon Borglum, the creator of Rushmore and the sculpture of so many fine pieces of art around the world you may have seen before, such as the “Seated Lincoln.”

Custer State Park
On our way back to camp we came across a byway on 16 called Custer Park. You may have heard of Custer State Park in Hermosa, SD, home of the buffalo. It’s a beautiful twisty byway through the mountains. It’s a little terrifying to drive so close to a cliff at times but you gotta see the sites. We came across some crazy buffalo fighting in the middle of the street. There was a whole heard of them and by the looks of oncoming cars, they have held up traffic for a while. My husband doesn’t have much patience when it comes to “cattle”, so he forced his way through unsuccessfully. I covered my eyes when we were dead stopped surrounded by these wild buffalo that don’t really have a care in the world. One buffalo decided to stand there and smell our car. I thought for sure he was going to push the car with his horns. Josh laughed at me quoting the ever so popular commercial where the buffalo damages a car and the men say, “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there!” We came home to find muddy buffalo kisses on the front of the car.
