Day 8
Saturday, June 25, 2016 Explore Old Orchard Beach
We had a bit of a late start to the day. Carmen, Colin and I walked around the RV resort to check things out and decide what amenities we wanted to make priority. We later got in the car and headed around back of the resort to beach access. We made our way to the beach's edge and it was a crazy zoo out there. PEOPLE WERE EVERYWHERE! Josh and I quickly decided we would NOT be going to the beach today! Seeing as it was a beautiful Saturday morning, it was the place to be and we could wait till Monday to re-visit the beach. So yesterday while cruising downtown Old Orchard Beach, we saw a big banner that said ARTS FESTIVAL Saturday June, 25th. It was a great alternative to beach going.
The festival had shut down Saco's, Main Street. It seemed like a quaint little area and lots of friendly people. There were a lot of artists displaying paintings, drawings and photography of Maine. We were very interested but couldn't accommodate any more items on our bus. So we chose a beautiful glass lobster bowl as our handmade souvenir. We went to all the booths and had a little fun chatting with the local artists. One man in particular taught the kids to tell all their friends that all it does in Maine is rain and snow so that they have bragging rights to how lucky we were to have experienced such rare beautiful weather as we did that day! The kids were amused with the local police conversing with a walking hot dog. Charlie had to take photos of them.
Later we decided to go back and brave the crowd at the famous "Pier" at Old Orchard Beach. The Pier is a historic part of Old Orchard. There are many small shops and restaurants along the Pier. We chose to stop at an Irish Pub called Hooligans on the Pier to have lunch. Josh and I decided to share most of our meals from this point on. Old Orchard is also known for their amusement park along the beach so we went to check things out after dinner. We only paid for short term parking so we didn't ride any rides that day.
We had a long day so we went back to the resort where I took the boys swimming. After 15 short minutes, they were done so as we were walking back we heard a band playing so we stopped. It dawned on me that tonight was live music and ice cream social. So I called the rest of the family and they came up and we all enjoyed social hour.
